Hip Replacement and Orthopedic Surgery

Our team of experts at Texas Institute of Orthopedic Surgery & Sports Medicine are committed to providing each patient with high-quality treatments and personalized care for a vast array of hip conditions. Contact us today to schedule your consultation at any of our locations in the state of Texas.

Conditions We Commonly Treat

We treat a vast array of hip conditions at our practice. Many hip conditions are successfully treated without surgery. After an initial diagnosis is made, nonoperative treatment may be indicated and possibly include medication, physical therapy, and/or injection therapy. At times, further diagnostic evaluation with advanced imaging may be needed to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. After diagnosis, our team will establish the right treatment plan for you.

Common hip conditions we treat include:

  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Fractures
  • Tendon Strains
  • Hip Flexor & Hamstring Injuries

Hip Surgery Treatments

Once a diagnosis has been made, our surgeons will recommend an individualized treatment plan. Should operative management of your injury or condition be indicated, our surgeons will fully discuss the proposed procedure with you as well as the post-operative plan and expectations. Some of the hip procedures that our surgeons may recommend include:

  • Total Hip Replacement
  • Hip Fracture Treatment
  • Tendon Repair
  • IT Band Procedures

What Is Hip Replacement Surgery?

Hip replacement surgery may be required if your hip cartilage has been damaged by arthritis, you have experienced a hip fracture, or suffer from hip pain and stiffness. The procedure entails removing and replacing portions of the pelvis and femur that form the hip joint. There are two major surgical approach methods for performing hip surgery: the posterior approach, which is more common, and the anterior approach. The procedure usually takes 1-2 hours.

Preparing for Hip Replacement Surgery

You may be advised by our surgeons to complete a medical examination with your primary care doctor. Other preoperative exams may be required, and your surgeon will inform you of any additional tests that need to be performed before your hip replacement procedure.

Risks of Hip Replacement Surgery

The complication rate for hip replacement surgery is very low. Serious complications, such a joint infection, occur in less than 2% of patients. Additional complications may include:

  • Infection
  • Blood clots
  • Dislocation
  • Bleeding
  • Stiffness
  • Nerve and blood vessel injury
  • Pain

What to Expect After Hip Surgery

Most patients can walk with a cane or walker within a day or two after hip replacement surgery. You will begin rehabilitation the same day after surgery, and pain medication will be prescribed to you. Full recovery can take anywhere from 12-16 weeks.

We Provide On-Site Physical Therapy

Once you have received surgical care, it is time for the next step: physical therapy. Rather than provide a referral to an outside clinic, we provide physical therapy on-site, ensuring that our physicians can stay up to date on your progress. Physical therapy can include mobility and strength exercises, as well as innovative procedures such as dry needling, cupping, myofascial release, Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), sports therapy, and manual therapy.
